Ayurvedic Medicine (or "Ayurveda" for short) is one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems, encompassing both the mind and body. It was developed in India over 3,000 years ago.
Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance of body, mind and spirit. Its main purpose is to promote good health, not fight disease. But treatments can target specific health problems.
Those who practice Ayurveda believe that every person is made up of five basic elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water and earth. These combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies called doshas. They determine how certain processes work within your body. They are Vata dosha (space and air); Pitta dosha (fire and water); and Kapha dosha (water and earth).
Everyone inherits a unique blend of the three doshas, but one is usually more present than the other. Ayurveda assumes that physical and mental health problems are caused by a disturbance in the natural, personal balance of the doshas.
